If Jesus Can Calm the Sea, What Can't He Do?

ENCOURAGEMENTS: March 23, 2022

I was reading in Luke the other day, and I came across the story of Jesus calming the sea. If you don't know the story, here's the short passage:

Luke 8:22-25:

"One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”

It's a pretty straightforward story: Jesus and the disciples are sailing, a humongous storm washes over them, they wake up Jesus for help, and he stops the storm. But do you realize the magnitude of that phrase?

"He stops the storm."

Have you ever tried to stop a storm? We have zero power when it comes to the weather. We can take shelter, we can board up our windows or we can evacuate, but we have zero authority over stopping what it does. It's funny to imagine all the waves, the thunder and the lightning surrounding their little boat, and Jesus is literally asleep, unbothered. Yet, this passage says when the disciples, who were freaking out, woke up Him up, He simply asked where their faith was and stopped the storm. I love, too, how the disciples then say, "Who is this guy that even winds and water obey Him?!"

This story is a great reminder that no matter what you're going through, if Jesus can calm a storm, what can't he do for you? There's no problem, no trial, and no pain too great for the Lord to fix. He's got you! Just have faith, and be like the disciples and go to Him for help.
